Looking at the recent photos and reading the postings re:- Botwell
Missioners and Hayes FC brings back memories from the mid 1940s when
as a young 13yr old I sold match programmes outside the ground to
earn enough money to pay for the coach fare to go to the away games.
One ofthe most memorable was the trip to Bristol City in an FA cup
match. We were paid 1/4d for every 100 sold and it was easy to sell 300.
I believe the lady who used to hand out the programmes for sale was a
Mrs Davidson who lived in Wood End. (NOT QUITE SURE ABOUT THAT).
Some names of the players in those days that come to mind were Mickey
Douse. Dump Atkins Ron Gadsden.
Any job to earn a bob in those days was welcome and if you were lucky
there were other jobs around the ground.
