These are rare remains of wooden grave markers, common in prevous centuries among those unable to afford headstones.

Thanks to local historian and author Philip Sherwood for explaining this (some people had thought they were the remains of stocks). Philip was astonished to see our pictures showing that some of these wooden gravemarkers still exist in St Mary's churchyard.
