The end of another piece of local history, and one of the last links to the 'Berkeley' family of Cranford. The demolition of the Red House in Cranford Lane, taken a few weeks ago. This fine old house was built in the 1850's by Thomas Moreton Berkeley, the official sixth earl who refused the title and lived there as plain Mr. Moreton Berkeley. The house was unique insofar as it had several'bricked-up' windows a practice carried out many years ago to avoid the window tax. (view 1)
