Jon .. In case you saw the photos about the Gramophone Works in Hayes and notice they have gone, I have found a copyright notice and must gain permission first for reproduction. I believe they were interesting enough to go ahead and write to the publishers for that permission so will see what happens.

Why not just post them in the meantime. We can remove them if you get a no.

I don't really like to infringe the rules. There is a special request which, once I saw it, is quite clear that permission should be sought and so I think I ought to observe that.

I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem as the Gramaphone company ceased to be so long ago.

Copyright law in photos and other creations still exists. Whether it applies to this I'm not sure but will find out. I think it's best this way.

A THANKYOU TO HAYES PHOTOS. Some time ago, I discovered Hayes again, through the Forum and Photos. Many people cannot guess how life has been for each person, but for me, it has been a challenge to get through what life had in store for me from the time the above photo was taken. Later, many memories of Hayes had been blocked out by the intensity of sad and difficult events and experiences I had yet to surmount. Then, by seeing photos and memories of Hayes, past and present, slowly pieces of my past life there began to come back and I'm able to look back now to happy times, many of which were at Mellow Lane School. Gradually, I was able to start looking at my own photos which although showed happiness, caused upset feelings, and so had been put away. Recently, on Photos, I was reunited with a past Mellow Lane pupil, David, and we have now met up in person. We were able to talk about our lives, and fond memories of our schooldays. Time went too quickly but we had a great time, talking as though there had been no time at all between then and now. Life can serve up raw deals to have to get through, but it can also suddenly come up with a treat that can be both inspiring and uplifting. So thankyou to Hayes Photos for providing a place where the most unexpected can happen just by taking part in posting our photos. With Best Wishes from Marian x

More memories of being a pupil at Mellow Lane have been revived by watching Strictly Come Dancing recently. Once a week, after school, Mr Bright gave ballroom-dancing lessons. He used to single me out to be his partner demonstrating the quickstep. I found that this was the hardest dance to master and I was so nervous in front of everyone that he would tell me in rather a loud voice to stop shaking like a jelly! (Much to everyone's amusement :-) ) It didn't do much to build my confidence up but I still went on with the lessons and I learnt enough to enjoy going dancing in Hayes, Uxbridge and Ealing, usually on Friday and Saturday nights.

Hello, EddieG. You must have already been at Mellow Lane when I started there. Most of those teachers I remember. Mr Ross is on a choir photo, I think, and is one of the names that had slipped my memory. Didn't know about the Edmundo nickname though :-). Mr Benton was another one I had forgotten and don't remember a Miss Topalian. Who could forget Miss Beer and yes, she taught biology. As far as I remember, Mr Friend taught geography. I remember him well for keeping the whole class in for detention after school because of a few individual's bad behaviour. I was very upset about it because there was a bus-strike and I knew my parents would be watching the clock for when I got home. On explaining to Mr Friend, he let me go. I can't remember about the rest of the class though. I can't recall Mr Luddington or Miss Topalian. Also, the bus-strike is bringing back some memories now!

Some of us pupils had quite a long journey to get to Mellow Lane School from the Bourne Avenue side of Hayes. During that bus-strike I mentioned above, once getting into Hayes Town I waited with my friends in our school-uniforms at the bus-stop outside Paynes. Everyone had to rely on motorists to stop and get us to school if going our way. (It was safer then as long as in groups). Imagine our surprise when a gleaming, black Rolls Royce pulled up! The distinguished looking driver asked us where we had to get to, and next minute we were passengers in the huge car. I remember the cream-coloured leather upholstery and how much space there was. We were just gliding along Church Road and then the Uxbridge Road. Imagine the excited talk and laughter, when we climbed out with our school satchels opposite Hewens Road at Hayes End. There was what looked like a box containing a film on the back seat so we came to the conclusion it was someone driving to Denham Studios or Pinewood.

Hi EddieG. Most of the teachers you mention were still at the school in the late '50s. Miss Topalian is the only name I don't recognise. My years at the school were 1955-60. Marian, what a great story about the Rolls Royce. Who can top that?

I've just remembered another teacher! Mr Perkins!! A memory of him is that in a science lesson, he handed a thermometer out and it was passed round for all of us to look at. I accidentally broke it and was sent to Headmaster Mr Watson. I nervously stood outside his room for ages, holding the broken thermometer. When he eventually came out to see me I apprehensively told him why I had been sent to him. 'Did you mean to break it then?' he asked. 'No Sir, it was an accident' I replied. I was sent back to class with a message for Mr Perkins to see him after lessons. Phew! :-) Mr Perkins had the nickname 'Polly' (bit obvious!). I remember Mrs Beardwood as a very kind lady, and I believe taught biology as well as English. A faint memory of Mr Jackson is coming back. There can't be many more names to recall! Hope you don't mind me asking but are you on the football photos, EddieG?

Yes I am, I dont know if Josh has made any progress with the Photo Album part of the site, but his E-Mail said that when it was fixed he would post them. Yes your right thats about all the teachers I can remember. Also in my year were Alec & Geoff Corran who lived in Redmead Rd,and whose father stood as the Tory candidate for Hayes & Harlington some years after I left school.

Ah .. I remember the very nice Corran twins, Alec and Geoff, so that is giving me an idea of your year now and some names that I remember. An unusual name was Dallas Dodge. Regarding the photos not uploading, I believe there is a problem further along the line. Will have to wait to see who you are :-) Marian.

Yes Dallas was a youg Adonis,as I remember, absolutly useless at most sports, except,he could throw a javelin for miles and was superb as a wing forward at rugby in which he played for Middlesex schools. The Corran twins are in one of the photos I sent to Josh.

The Corran twins, as I remember them, were not what you would call 'identical twins' but I wonder if you remember Fay and Hilary Woods who were definitely identical? They may have been in your year or maybe higher. They had a claim to fame too!

Fay and Hilary were the twins who appeared in the advert 'Which Twin Has The Toni?' I have a copy from a magazine. Going back to Dallas Dodge, would you know if he was actually American? He looked it, but I never actually spoke to him so wouldn't know if he had an American accent.

I thought the teacher who taught biology was Miss Beer. Dallas Dodge wasn't American. Very popular with the girls though!

Yes, Miss Beer did teach biology. I mentioned Mrs Beardwood as well because I have a memory of her teaching us in the biology classroom. Maybe she was standing in for Miss Beer for some reason but it's a little bit too far back for me to remember (unfortunately). Thanks for enlightening me regarding Dallas Dodge. I also remember that he was very popular :-)

Dallas had a part in the play "Ghost of a chance" that I've mentioned in another photo somewhere on this site. He was indeed well liked. Had a great sense of humour. He was in the year above mine, and must have left in 1959. Miss Beer taught me biology, and Mrs. Beardwood (Dolly) was our English teacher along with Mr. Day. One teacher whose name I've not seen mentioned is Mr. Mortimer. He didn't teach any of my subjects but I believe he was House Master of Park House.

David, Dallas was in my year and I left after 'O' levels in summer 1957,and I do remember Mr Day and also Mr Mortimer but not what they taught. Marian, I am afraid I don't remember the Woods twins possibly, as you say,a year above me,I had identical girls twins in my form Janet & Jennifer New.

Mr Day taught me English and English Literature. At that time he wore one of those teachers black gowns (can't remember what they were called). He sailed down the gangway past my desk in one lesson and his gown caught my bottle of bright blue ink and tipped it over my written work. :-( I suppose I had to do the work again but he was apologetic so that was something. He had an unfortunate nickname but I quite liked him so I never used it. I'm trying to think what Mr Mortimer taught and also trying to recall the New twins. I remember the names now you mention them, EddieG. I think that the Woods twins will come back to you if ever I can post the picture of 'which Twin Has the Toni'. Toni was a make of perm. for when ladies wanted to have curly hair. Actually, I think the Woods twins were joint School Captains and because we couldn't tell the difference, each one was often referred to as Fhilary. :-) I am going to look through some cuttings to find the New twins. I wonder if you have any Form photos from that time which they may be on?
