Hayes was a popular area for factories, because of the conjunction of the Great Western Railway and the Grand Junction Canal. HMV built on the western side of the "X", and the Aeolian Company on the eastern. Finished Pianola Pianos were shipped away by train, but the raw materials arrived by barge, and were offloaded in the small dock at the western edge of the factory site.

This is the entrance to the dock from the north side of the canal.

I'm trying to place exactly where this is. At first glance I thought it was Bulls Bridge, but I see from one of the other pix that it's actually called "Shackle Dock Bridge". I'm trying to imagine exactly where this is. When was this picture taken?

I can't remember exactly when this was, except that it was sometime in 1999. A good friend of mine, Mike Davies, and I spent an afternoon at Hayes with the intention of documenting what remained of the Aeolian factory for the sake of pianola history. In fact, I'm delighted that middx.net can act as a public gallery for these pictures. The bridge is on the north side of the canal, as you walk towards London and away from Station Road. The little dock is still there, but difficult to see amongst all the industrial buildings. I'll post a picture of it.

Sounds like its much further west than bulls bridge. Of course, it would have to be wouldn't it if it led to a factory in Silverdale Road!! I might just have to go and have a look for it some time!

I've just posted a map of the factory site, taken from the original agreement in 1908, by which the Orchestrelle Company purchased the land from Mr Shackle. You can see Shackle's Dock at the western end. If you're going along there, take a picture!

It is about 300 yds down from the bridge at the Old Crown, you can get a better view of its location from Google Earth!
