Poster: pianola
(see this users gallery) This group of exterior photos was taken on 30 November 1977, with demolition of the former Walls Sausage and Meat Pie buildings in full swing. This shot is a rough composite from three photos which I took, so excuse the sudden changes of sky colour, and the slight misalignment of buildings - it gives you an overall impression.
On the left is the former Universal Music Company factory, which had been extended to roughly double its original size over the years. In the middle is the tower of the 1920 piano factory, and you can see the oval shape at the top where the Walls trade mark had been. On the right is the original Orchestrelle Co Weber Piano factory, which is still there, and known as Benlow Works.
The photo was taken from the north-east corner of the site, looking roughly towards Heathrow. |
