HAYES AND HARLINGTON
The book covers the history of Dawley (the northernmost part of Harlington Parish) from prehistoric times up to and including the 20th Century. The architectural story of the important buildings on the site (James Gibbs was involved) is fully explained for the first time, using original manuscripts related to pictorial evidence. The contents of the houses in the 18th Century are given in inventories and auctioneer’s lists between 1712 and 1772; social life is illuminated by Lord Ossulstone’s diaries and accounts of Lord Bolingbroke and his friends who included Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift and Voltaire. Incidentally Queen Elizabeth did sleep here! Among other aspects of Dawley history included in the book are the gardens (almost rivalling those of Hampton Court), Tatersall’s racehorse stud farm, the cutting of the canal, the Great Western Railway, mineral extraction; and manufacturing industry ranging from Glaxo’s first pharmaceuticals to EMI and finally to the highly-acclaimed Stockley Park A copy of the book may be obtained by completing the form below.
