Overdrive Valiant

This 1950 Albion CX39 Duple has an overdrive unit, worked by a second gearlever. It was new to Isaac Hutchison and never served with Western. It has been with the Albion Vehicle Preservation Trust since the 1960s.

Note the Albion Oil Engine Badge at the base of the radiator, this engine was a mighty 9.9 litres, the optional petrol unit was even bigger at 10.45 litre, producing 145bhp.

I once had a ride on this. The overdrive unit appears to be constant mesh like the main gearbox, with a neutral position between low and high ratios, and a requirement to double declutch. This makes me wonder if there is anything to stop it from being used on the intermediate gears.

Strange, there seems to be an echo in here. Anyway, I've now had an answer. Roger Burdett has purchased a pre-war Albion coach with the same arrangement, and says the overdrive can be used in any gear. However, it occurs to me that any attempt to use this for split changes must avoid having both levers in neutral at the same time, which would result in being "lost in space", with no means of synchronising the intermediate drive shaft to complete the change.

And please pass my thanks on to Roger for taking on the former Red & White coach. Previously I have seen it at the back of a Lathalmond shed looking dejected, so it is heartening to know it is in good hands.

I can understand how both gearbox and overdrive in neutral would end in coasting gracefully to a halt.... I guess the ZF splitter beloved of DAF in the 1980s would not let that happen, and I suppose if you were using a small-displacement engine with a narrow usable torque band then as many ratios as possible would be useful, as they are to pedal cyclists and were also to Foden, who pioneered the range-change gearbox in UK wagons (although not in their coaches).

Am I right in thinking that the coach Roger has is equipped with a Gardner 6LW? I think that the Watts family who owned Red & White were the first to think of the combination of a 6LW and an overdrive gearbox for an express coach, commissioning what they wanted in 1933 from the Gloucester Carriage and Wagon company? These coaches, sold as Gloster-Gardner predated Bristol Dennis and Albion by a few years.

Last year I finally got a ride in FVA854, sadly it was a circuit of Urban Glasgow, I'd love the chance to record it stretching its legs sometime. I must ask Paul or one of the other Albion people next time I meet them in Bridgeton.
