Hi I recently purchased a 1965 AEC Mercury with a small beaver tail body, however the original build sheet details it as a tractor unit, as I also purchased the original 5th wheel with it, (which had been removed to fit the beaver tail) I would like to refurb the truck as a tractor unit. My concern is that it has an 11' 6" wheelbase which looks rather long for a tractor unit, my question is, was the WB for a Mercury tractor unit 11' 6" or was this a special. |

As far as I know, all pre-Ergo Mercury tractors were 8ft.9in. w/b. and were based on the 12 ton chassis which, from 1954-61 was GM and 1962-65 was 5GM. The next 12 ton w/b was 11ft.0in. which would have been for a tipper. The only 11ft.6in. w/b were 14 ton tipper chassis, 2GM from 1956-61 and 6GM from 1962-65. GM and 5GM had Marles cam-and-roller steering boxes and 4.25 ton front axles; 2GM and 6GM had AEC worm-and-nut steering and 5.5 ton front axles. If yours was built as a tractor, I would think it must have been a "special". |
